Wednesday Kyoto

I am staying at the Sowaka Kyoto a ryokan that “was created by allowing young artists and artisans to play at the intersection of preservation and innovation… It is a showroom of all things Kyoto… where the interplay between new and old, luxury and simplicity, tradition and flexibility create a warm dialogue between Kyoto’s past and future.”

Sowaka is a Sanskrit word meaning “happiness” or “wellbeing.” How appropriate considering the theme of my trip (life?): Doraku 道楽 the path to happiness.

After settling into my room. I headed out to explore my neighborhood. Returned for a rest then out again for… you guessed it a yummy sushi dinner. The sushi restaurant was recommended by one of the hotel staff. Both he and Ross, when asked for Kyoto sushi restaurant recommendations immediately went to the über, high-end places. I had to emphasize that I was seeking good sushi but not fancy sushi. More like standing-counter or conveyer-belt sushi places.

Cruisin’ around the streets of Kyoto
